Criminal Law

The California Penal Code divides offenses into three categories: Felonies, Misdemeanors, and Infractions. Many crimes are misdemeanors for the first offense and felonies for the second offense. Felonies are the most serious crimes, and are punishable by lengthy prison terms and large fines. Whether you are accused of a white collar crime, a simple misdemeanor, or a felony, being in trouble with the law can be a terrifying experience. If this has happened to you, or if you think it may, you need experienced attorneys to help guide you through what will be the most difficult time of your life. The Criminal Law attorneys at the Curtis Legal Group are experienced in handling a broad spectrum of criminal matters -- ranging from minor traffic offenses to major felonies.

If you are accused of a crime, you may be indicted or arrested outright. Either way, you need the services of an experienced criminal attorney as soon as possible into your case. Even though the vast majority of cases never go to trial, your attorney needs to prepare every case as if it will result in a trial. At the very least, your attorney needs every available piece of information in order to properly negotiate on your behalf. After your arrest or indictment, the California criminal justice system operates in very specific ways.

You make at least two court appearances where you need your lawyer present--at an initial hearing, and at least one pretrial.

During this time, your attorney is negotiating with the state to try to get your case dropped or revised, and to determine what the best course of action for you should be. These negotiations happen privately while your attorney, the prosecutor, and ultimately the judge work to determine the best course of action.

If negotiations fail, and you do wind up at trial, our attorneys have the knowledge, experience, and energy to ensure that you are being fully represented, no matter how complex or sensitive your case may be.
